The Silent Saboteur: Why Your Marketing Goals Aren’t Enough (And What to Do About It)

The Silent Saboteur: Why Your Marketing Goals Aren't Enough (And What to Do About It)

This mistake is killing your marketing strategy. And your motivation and revenue.

I know you’re hustling hard to grow your business and attract more customers. But let me tell you, there’s a mistake that’s holding you back from achieving your goals. And it’s a big one.

Here’s the thing: many small business owners focus solely on the outcomes they want to achieve. They say things like:

  • “We need to find 20 clients now.” (More often than not, yesterday it’s what we hear)
  • “We need +15K of MRR next month.”
  • “We need a 25% increase in retention.”

And don’t get me wrong, having clear objectives is important. You absolutely need them. But here’s the catch: you can’t just set those objectives and expect them to magically happen. You can’t leave the meeting without a plan.

Objectives are great, but they’re just the tip of the iceberg. To actually achieve them, you need to follow a process. It goes like this:

🎯 Objectives → 📊 Action Plan → 🚀 Execution

Without a proper plan in place, you’ll find yourself in a never-ending cycle of trying out the latest “hacks” and jumping from one tactic to another. You’ll be constantly testing new things, forgetting what you’ve tried before, and trying them again. It’s a recipe for confusion and frustration.

Trust me, I’ve been there. Someone once told me, “Diana, your marketing sounds like engineering.” – and you know what? They were right. Aside being a software engineer turned marketer, and the way I approach marketing is inspired from my experience in IT projects, both as a software developer and project manager, marketing is all about frameworks, processes, and systems. They help me structure my workload, track what works, and stay in control.

So here’s my advice to you:

1️⃣ Analyze your objectives: Take a step back and really understand what you want to achieve. Set clear, measurable goals that align with your business vision.

2️⃣ Map out all the steps: Break down your objectives into actionable tasks. Create a roadmap that outlines the specific actions you need to take to reach your goals.

3️⃣ Plan the execution: Develop a detailed plan for how you’ll implement each step. Consider timelines, resources, and any potential obstacles you might face along the way.

4️⃣ Track and stay in control: Monitor your progress closely. Keep an eye on key metrics and adjust your strategy as needed. Stay proactive and make data-driven decisions.
